You might hear your student’s band director, orchestra conductor or private instructor talk about step up and professional instruments. Those educators are a fantastic source of information on what will be best for your student as he or she progresses beyond their beginning instrument.

As your player advances and encounters more demanding music, their instrument should match their growing skills. Their beginning student instrument was a great start to their musical journey and “stepping up” will take them even further!

In short, if you are having a hard time getting the instrument out of your student’s hands – you will probably be looking at a step up (intermediate level) instrument by the time high school rolls around. If the goal is to continue with music through college – it will be best to look more closely at choosing a professional level instrument.
